چکیده

A 78-year-old woman presented with progressive ataxia, dysautonomia (hypotension and urinary incontinence), and pyramidal signs that started 17 years ago. Brain MRI performed 15 years ago showed pontocerebellar atrophy and the “hot cross bun” sign (Figure 1). Multiple system atrophy, cerebellar form (MSA-C) was diagnosed. A routine brain CT scan performed two years ago disclosed pontine calcification (Figure 2). Multiple system atrophy is a neurodegenerative disorder included in the synucleinopathies group1. The cerebellar form, MSA-C, usually causes pontocerebellar atrophy and a “hot cross bun” sign in the pons, due to selective loss of myelinated transverse pontocerebellar fibers and raphe1,2. This prospective observation demonstrates that pontine calcification may be part of the neurodegeneration process in MSA-C.

Pontine atrophy precedes cerebellar degeneration in spinocerebellar ataxia 7: MRI-based volumetric analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Spinocerebellar ataxia 7 (SCA7) is characterised by cerebellar ataxia and visual loss. The aim of the present study was to elucidate the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings characteristic of patients with SCA7. METHODS Twenty patients with SCA (eight SCA3, three SCA6, and nine SCA7) and 20 control subjects underwent an MRI-based volumetric analysis. RESULTS Th...

Large‐scale mitochondrial DNA deletion underlying familial multiple system atrophy of the cerebellar subtype

A family with mitochondrial inheritance of multiple system atrophy of the cerebellar subtype. MRI brain shows significant cerebellar atrophy with mild pontine atrophy and the classical hot cross bun sign in Pons. The muscle biopsy was indicative of mitochondrial myopathy. Mitochondrial DNA analysis revealed a low-level large mtDNA deletion, m.3264_1607del12806 bp.

Chronic exposure to cerebrospinal fluid of multiple system atrophy in neuroblastoma and glioblastoma cells induces cytotoxicity via ER stress and autophagy activation

Oncogenesis and neurodegeneration share many common pathogenic pathways, involved in endoplastic reticulum (ER) stress, autophagy, DNA repair, and oxidative stress. However, mechanisms of cross-talking between oncogenesis and neurodegeneration are still unknown. Characterized by abnormal accumulation of α-synuclein (α-syn) aggregates in central nervous system (CNS), multiple system atrophy (MSA...

Multiple system atrophy is a sporadic alpha-synucleinopathy that typically affects patients in their sixth decade of life and beyond. The defining clinical features of the disease include progressive autonomic failure, parkinsonism, and cerebellar ataxia leading to significant disability. Pathologically, multiple system atrophy is characterized by glial cytoplasmic inclusions containing filamen...

Pregnancy in multiple system atrophy: a case report

INTRODUCTION Multiple system atrophy is a late, adult-onset α-synucleinopathy with no data on the effect of pregnancy on the disease course. Early stage multiple system atrophy can be difficult to distinguish from Parkinson's disease. CASE PRESENTATION We describe the case of an Irish woman with parkinsonism starting at age 31, initially diagnosed as having dopa-responsive, idiopathic Parkins...
